My dear friend. I didn't know about this until today. I only knew you briefly while working at Camp Winnebago in 2005 in Maine. You were very kind as a person and always invited me to try new delicious plates from creative talent as a chef. I always will appreciate that even as that job was my first in the USA, you were welcoming and patient to help me feel comfortable even when I didn't speak great English. Rest in peace, my dear friend Abdus. I will never forget you.

I was thinking about Abdus today, as I do often. When I would call, he always used to say "It's sooooo good to hear your voice." Did he say that to everyone? I don't know. But it felt so personal every single time. And I miss it. I miss hearing his beautiful voice too...

To my family: I am so sad & I feel an emptyness now that my cousin is gone, but glad I had the chance to grow up with you & laugh & speak to you before you left. My world will be a little different without you, but on the other hand I know I have another Angel to watch over me. We will always take care of Aunt Lois, don't worry. Sleep well my dear cousin until I see you again. You'll be forever in my heart, in my prayers and your voice will be eternally in my mind. Thanks for all the advice, love and jokes. I love you
Pattie and Uncle Chico.

About 11 years ago I had the privilege of knowing Abdus when he was cooking at an MIT dining hall that was close to my office. After enjoying a couple of meals there I became a regular customer and would often pick up dinner on my way home in the evening. I also enjoyed getting to know Abdus, who always welcomed me and shared his recipes, writing them out in long hand. While traveling to Germany that year I was able to visit the restaurant he opened in Berlin, and I brought back pictures of their chef and their menu. How sad it was when the dining hall closed. I missed not only Abdus’ culinary delights but my chats with him
Fast forward to Sept. 1, 2016. I was watching the CBS evening news, and suddenly realized that Abdus was being interviewed with others from Brookdale. Two MIT students had developed a virtual reality technique for Seniors that allowed them to visit places from home. Abdus was “visiting” the Berlin restaurant. I immediately contacted the students who put me in touch with Marc Cohen at Brookdale. A few days later Abdus called me and we kept in contact for a while. I had no idea that he was ill, and kept encouraging him to get back to cooking. Had I known I would have made sure to visit.
Every time I attempt to recreate one of Abdus’ recipes, I’ll have fond memories of him. I am very sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kelly

I was so sad to hear the news last night that Abdus passed away. My thought and prayers are with his family. He was so proud of them and loved to talk about them. He would light up! Abdus was one of the kindest and most thoughtful men I had met. His words were always so powerful and always from his heart. He will be missed by so many. I am so sorry for your loss.

My deepest sympathies go out to Marcia Wells, her mother, and the children of Abdus Shakur, who passed away yesterday. It is my hope that they all can take comfort from the role he played in their lives and they in his—right up to the end.

This is a very special family. I send them all my love.
