On May 16, 2020, Maria Da Luz Teixeira Lopes affectionately known as Bai, passed away peacefully at the age of 102, in her Dorchester, MA home. Bai is preceded by her husband
Severiano Lopes and her daughter Margarida Lopes. She was born on September 25, 1917 to the late, Pedro Barbosa-DaSilva and Carolina Teixeira in Sao Lourenco, Fogo.
Bai, is survived by her children; Antonio Lopes, Augusto Lopes, Alberto Lopes, Maria Antonia Brandao and Pedro DaSilva. She leaves twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren, fourteen great-great grandchildren and three great-great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends to cherish her memories.
Bai, married her late husband Serviano Lopes in 1944. They made their home in the Santa Marta area of Fogo. She was known as the “Mae di Santa Marta”. Bai was the midwife of the area and assisted in many births. Bai migrated to the United States in 1988 to Dorchester, MA. Bai loved to attend the Cape Verdean Senior Center, she loved that she was able to see her old friends, exercise, listen to morna and spend time reminiscing about their home land Cape Verde. At home you can find her playing orin with her grandchildren and smoking her canhutu. Bai lived a simple life, it didn’t take much to make her happy - a phone call, bringing her favorite candy, her favorite flowers and just painting her nails made her day.
Bai, was a woman full of faith, grace, courage and a true definition of what we all should aspire to be. The type of love she felt for her family and friends, was a love without condition. She didn’t lecture, she didn’t judge. Bai loved us, letting us know that she was there whenever we needed her. We could count on Bai to listen, to comfort and to help. Thank you for your wisdom, your humor, your tenderness, your compassion, your understanding, your patience and most importantly your love.
